Finding Beauty in the Quiet Moments

I just got back from 12 days in Vegas. My brain is fried and my body tired of all that place represents. Now don't get me wrong - I had a blast. Probably too much fun a couple nights.

I realized something special while I was there. Amidst all of the hard work, the people that I call my friends are truly special and unique in their own way. It's pretty amazing when you can return home and feel like your job was equal parts work, laughter, smiles, and omg... fun!

Bohemian Chic Outfit Details... feeling wholesome and relaxed!

Zara and JCrew kinda outfit - Zara skirt (here), Zara off the shoulder top (here only $15!!) and JCrew Denim jacket with Jcrew flip flops (on sale!) (here and here)

Two days after I returned home to Boston, I got on a train bound for NYC (for a hot second) and found myself overstimulated and very frustrated with the amount of people that were running around haphazardly outside Penn Station. It gave me so much angst that I couldn't wait to get off the street and away from the craze. Typically I love the energy on the streets of NYC, but that day I wanted to be anywhere but there.

I have yet to spend anytime recouping (as seen by the two martinis I drank last night) and I am in desperate need of it.  I like to call it "Finding the quiet" which is super important for the following:

- striking balance between worlds

- eating clean, organic, and minimal ingredient foods

- sweating it out; moving as much as possible to get out the kinks

- reconnecting to ourselves, our loved ones (human or furry), and our surroundings

- making sure our "house" (both proverbial and literal) is in order; messy house, messy mind; clean house, clean mind

- breathing in fresh air, long walks in nature

So, that's the goal for the weekend - to find "my quiet". I may not reach all of the above, but I will put in quite the effort to get there.

Have a fun, fashionable Thursday,

kiki

Pink, White, and Blue: A Nautical Memorial Day

If any of you follow me on Instagram you will know that I am not by the ocean this Memorial Day weekend. I am, in fact, in the dry desert of Las Vegas for work. Back in Boston it's supposed to be in 80's (which is the perfect temp for boating!) and I hope my New England buddies (including the hubby) take full advantage of the warm sunshine - I am so jealous!

Will (of Will Mann Photography) and I shot these down in the Seaport of Boston. We often cruise through here on the boat all summer, but it's also beautiful by land. The Seaport has quickly become one of my favorite parts of Boston and as it continues to build it just keeps getting better. More restaurants, more bars, more commerce... it used to be untapped real estate and now it's a goldmine. The City is doing a nice job creating buildings that fit into the overall landscape of the city and the are maintaining the integrity of buildings that are historical and important.

If you are interested in reading more about the Rise of the Seaport - check out these articles (some of which date back to 2012) - we all cursed the Big Dig and it will forever be something our city has to overcome, but without it the Seaport wouldn't be where it is now!

The Rise Of the Seaport - 2012 article with schematics/future look and feel of the Seaport

Popularity of Land - bidding wars over parking garages and any vacant spaces in Fort Point Channel

The Next Big Thing - The Seaport Square will have restaurants, shops, and housing!

Outfit details - Super classic and nautical inspired w/ navy and white stripes, a simple denim jacket and pops of pink. I do love navy and pink together....  Zara Turtleneck Dress (sold out, but a ton of similar styles here) /  SJP Pink Shoes (here) /  Rebecca Minkoff Bag (here)  /  J.Crew Denim Jacket (here) 30% off right now! /  Rayban Aviators (here)

Memorial Day is an opportunity to live the way all those who died wanted us to. Freely and happily. So do that!

This weekend is such a nice way to commence the summer even though technically we have a little more time on the calendar until the solstice actually hits. For me, it always conjures memories of warm sunshine, smiles, parades, softball uniforms, bands playing patriot music, grilling hot dogs and hamburgers and most importantly spending time with family/friends. I hope that wherever you are in the world you are doing something that makes your soul feel good.

Enjoy the long weekend!!!

Prioritizing and Balancing: 5 Easy Ideas!

This is a busy time of year for me at work, so I am really making an effort to find moments to bask in the blue skies and sunshine of the spring. In general, my goal as a working woman is to always strive for balance. My firm belief is that true and real balance equals happiness and health, which, in my opinion, also means less stress! The golden ticket question is: HOW DO WE GET TO BALANCE???

If you talk to some high level execs, they don't believe in work-life balance. Take Sheryl Sandberg (author of Lean In) for example; she says: "So there is no such thing as work life balance. There is work, and there's life, and there's no balance." I simultaneously agree and disagree with her, respectfully. What do I mean? I do think work-life balance is a mountain/valley cycle. Depending on the workload it can be easier/harder to execute. Which is why I think ultimately it's less about balancing and more about prioritizing....

Easier said then done, right? Life gets in the way - the mail stacks up, the house chores are overwhelming, too many emails, texts, phone calls to make, the grocery shopping, the obligations for this and that.... and the list goes on!  Truth is that balance is something you create by prioritizing, not something you just "find" on the side of the road....

Here are 5 easy ways to re-think balance and health in your life:

1. Do one thing at a time with full presence. In this age of technology we multi-task to a point of being the Jack/Jane of all trades and the master of none. Spending time mastering one thing gives a feeling of fulfillment that you can't get from doing multiple things all the time.

2. Nurture relationships with family and friends. Close your eyes and think about the best day you have had in a long time... think about the people that were there and the conversations that you had.... How happy did you feel? Did your face hurt from smiling? Did you think about the office at all? Probably not! The lesson is that even when you are "exhausted" and "too busy" to hang out with friends/family, still do it! It will re-energize and re-invigorate you. 9x's out of 10 these people love and prioritize you!!

3. Leave the past where it belongs, in the past! So often an incident will happen at work and I will dwell on it to a point where I over-think and over-analyze instead of just letting it go. Breathe deep and move on!! There is freedom in it, I promise!

4. Find time to be grateful. I have said this before, but 3 things. That's it. Every day - 3 things. Being grateful equates to being mindful.... even if your mind is full. (goes back to #1, above)

5. BREATHE. Breathing deep relaxes the mind and body. It creates harmony between your two worlds and makes you realize that it's not worth it to get so out of balance/harmony/rhythm!

This outfit is so happy and perfectly represents the sunshine and blue skies that I hope all of you find as adults navigating this complicated, grown-up world we live in. It's short, so we need to maximize every second and not get bogged down in the daily grind.

I wish you a life filled with the right priorities and ultimately, balance!

Have a fun, fashionable day,

kiki

Antigua for Two: The Ultimate R&R

In an effort to "make time" for each other in this busy, work-filled, and travel-centric life we lead, Bryce and I decided that a quick getaway was the ideal way to connect a string of uninterrupted moments together.

When his season ended we made last minute plans to scoot down to the island of Antigua. My parents had gone there back in the late 80's, so what little we knew of this spot in the British West Indies was from their very fond memories.

Before I dive into the details, I want to highlight three of my top takeaways from the trip:

- Disconnecting means two things: the literal translation and the figurative. First, we did not have any TV or Phone access the entire trip and it was the best thing that could have happen. Second, it was the perfect opportunity to loosen up, laugh, drink, soak up the sun, and reconnect with each other. The days seemed longer and more fulfilling...

- Beauty in nature has a direct connection to the beauty inside all of us. When we are in a gorgeous place and happy in our surroundings it allows us to feel the same!

- Love is all around us. Whether it was watching couples interact lovingly, the Antiguan staff's smiles and helpful attitude, my morning scrambled eggs coming out in the shape of a heart, or guests leaving food out for all of the pharrell cats... people are kind and generous and have full, open hearts. It was refreshing and definitely something to emulate!

We stayed at a placed called COCOS HOTEL (here) which is a small, boutique style, 30-cottage resort that is for adults only (sorry kids!). Without further delay, here are the pics of our journey!

After a quick flight from Boston to Miami to Antigua, we navigated through customs, through the tiny island airport, and into our even tinier rental car. The roads in Antigua are really something special! The drainage system is totally exposed and therefore the sides of the road are just like little cliffs and not to mention the potholes. We are pretty sure that we returned the car with one less hubcap! :o) It was all worth it when we arrived at COCOS. This was our first view.

COCOS is built into a hill with a beach on either side. There is some walking involved to get to our cottage, but man was it worth it every time. This is the way to our private Sunset Cottage.... (every time we rounded this corner and went down the stairs I said, "It gets me every time" and it's true..it did. Does it get you too?

Our cottage was pretty special. It faced west so we saw a gorgeous sunset every night (more on that later). It was rustic island chic at its best. It consisted of a bathroom, outdoor double shower, a bedroom with mosquito netting surrounding the canopy bed and a large sun porch. Impeccable and effortless. Every night we slept with the french doors and windows open so we could hear the ocean waves crash and echo underneath our porch. I bottled that sound so right now (as I type) I am closing my eyes so I can hear it... ahhh...

We spent a lot of time in our cottage because COCOS stocks it with your choice of booze and of course we made a MONSTER music playlist and brought our Nixon Mini Blaster Blaster... instant party! Plus with this view, why not??

Life's bucket list will include an outdoor shower... especially after this experience. Anytime we get stressed, B and I know say, "Antigua Shower" because it brings us back to the zen moments we spent there looking out over the water, watching the sun set, and the breeze roll over us.

Oh and the towel animals were so fun...

And the food.... all locally sourced from farms close to Cocos - it was delish and varied (well not the Cornados or the frog but he was too cute not to include)! And the drinks - YUMM!

The trip was a nice blend of relaxation and touristy sightseeing. COCOS is located in Jolly Harbour which is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. We rented a car so we could go out and explore. Some of the spots we recommend are:

-Jolly Harbour (where we stayed) had some fun little spots and a little slice of local living. Our first night on the island we walked the beach and went into the little village with brightly colored houses. We had our first Dark and Stormies of the trip and we saw a dog chillaxin' on a roof.

- English Harbour where we learned all about how Antigua was discovered and when it became independent. We also visited Nelson's Dockyard and saw the most beautiful, big sailboats ever. The views! The colors! The Dark & Stormies!

- OJ's is another spot not to miss. Not only is the food totally worth it, but so is the scenery. Take a look at all of the shells they use to decorate and the color of the water!

- Boat Rental. We talked about renting a boat the whole time we were there and as the week was coming to a close we decided that we definitely wanted to do it. In true Island fashion the rental facility was super laid back and within walking distance to our resort. Bryce was so excited to captain a boat in International waters! It was quite an experience. We were a little nervous because the boat didn't have GPS and there are shoals and rocky points that only a trained captain would be able to navigate, so we took it slow and followed other boater's lead on a lot of things. We went to Cades Reef where we dropped anchor and despite the wind, enjoyed some beers and good music! Funny thing is as we were pulling out of Jolly Harbour the Billy Joel song, Downeaster Alexa fortuitously came on! It was meant to be. What an experience!

A view of our cottage from the boat... ours was the first one on the beach...

This is the entire resort...

What would my post be without some outfit pics? I packed a carry-on with:

- island-ready dresses!

-bikinis and UV shirts (of course)

-beach cover-ups

-running gear (I ran every morning on the beach and then did yoga on the porch - amazing)

- oh and one pair of flip flops!

One thing I wish I could have brought home from Antigua is the beach-y and curly hair I had the whole time! It was amazing...

My favorite dress of all time (originally seen here on this blog) that I have in three colors deserves a little highlight! Here it is in navy.... with a pop of pink flower in my hair!

Music is a huge part of our lives, so the trip wouldn't have been complete without lots of good tunes - a mixture of upbeat, mellow, classics, and reggae. Our little Nixon Mini Blaster (buy here) is the easiest thing to pack and works off of bluetooth! So anyone can connect.

Whenever we hear the following we will think of our time in Antigua:

SHOW ME - Bruno Mars - reggae in a Bruno Mars-y way!

We Can't Stop - Miley Cyrus - we just like it.

Ghostown - Madonna - new album, so good!

Shots - Imagine Dragons - mellow but uplifting

Anything by Asgeir or Vancouver Sleep Clinic!!

And books... I read three on the trip:

Do Your Om Thing - by Rebecca Pacheco (here) - this book is written by one of my favorite Boston yoga teachers. I take her class every Thursday evening and I love it. Her book is no different. It's not about the end goal, it's about the journey. Perfect.

It Was Me All Along - by Andie Mitchell (here) - a local Boston girl struggles with weight and tells her story. My favorite message in the book is that it's all about taking one moment and one day at a time. Breathe through it!

Yoga Girl - by Rachel Brathen (here) - I finished this in one day because it's so easy to fall in love with Rachel and her bohemian lifestyle. When I grow up, I want to be her! :o)

Last, but certainly not least - the sunsets. I don't need to say anymore.

A video of the sunset from our cottage on our last night in paradise! Until next time, Cocos!

When we were researching places to go, one of the reviews we read said that the average person returns to COCOS 15x's in their life. I remember us scoffing at that because we enjoy traveling to different places, but by the end, when our skin was sunkissed, our bodies relaxed, minds free,  hearts full, and bags packed to go home, we looked at each other and said - "We get it. We will be back".

Love you B - thanks for the best trip ever! xoxo

Have a fun, fashionable day and book a trip to COCOS!

Navy and Yellow 2 Ways (with a side of philosophy)

It probably goes without saying, but this winter was really rough. Between the snow, the cold temps, and the eternal darkness, we deserve a bright, sunshine-filled spring full of warmth and outdoor time.

What the dark days did bring for me is a need for creating space. Space in my heart and in my mind. After pouring over a couple of wonderful yoga books in March I decided to take action. To do three things every day that seem so simple, but have the ability to put so much light into my life:

- Be Grateful. My yoga teacher wrote a book called Do Your Om Thing (buy here) and in it she recommends keeping a journal of three things we are grateful for every day. I adopted the idea and each evening after I wash my face and kiss the pups good night, I write down three items that brought joy into my life. It allows me to wind down and reflect on all of the good that exists, even in the simple things like my morning latte. :o)

- Do yoga every damn day. This doesn't mean sweat in a 90 minute class with crazy moves, it's much simpler. Just focus on one position each day. In doing so, I have learned patience with myself and in turn, fallen in love with the process. Fall in love with whatever your process is or means.

- Find quiet. For those that know me, you must know this is a difficult one! :o) Quiet time is good for the soul and acts as a recharge.

Okay okay... I get it - you didn't ask for a side of philosophy, now let's get down to the fashion details! :o)

My favorite colors for spring are navy and yellow. I like the way navy grounds outfits in a timeless, classic, "quiet" way while yellow adds intrigue and fun. Here I do it two ways: work day appropriate and casual chic.

Next to the snow piles you will notice the darkness melting away in the sunlight.... and my heart becoming more grateful, open, and accepting...

Work Day Outfit:

J. Crew #2 Pencil Skirt: HERE on sale for $88

Zara Navy Striped Button Down: HERE for $49.90

Zara Yellow Heels: HERE for $99.00 - they are the STAR of this whole post!!!

Rebecca Minkoff bag: HERE for details

Will and I shot on the one day in late February that happened to be in the mid-30's....scratch the surface and it's not hard to tell that there is still lots of snow on the ground. :o) He captured some very candid moments during this session and I appreciate it! Damn he is good - make sure you are following him on instagram and checking out his website from time to time - so talented. @williammannphotography and http://www.wmannphotography.com/

Throw the same Zara shoes and shirt on with some slouchy boyfriend jeans (these are Joes), a cute, socially responsible handbag, and a Nixon leather band watch (here). Done and done.

So I know that I went off on a tangent in the beginning and I apologize for the soap box moment, but I think it's important to remember that life is a process and in order to make progress, we must do things to open our minds and hearts..... ultimately that will be how we find happiness and warmth. Breathe in life, breathe out negativity!

Let that sunshine in, people! Spring is here!!

have a fun, fashionable (and perhaps soulful) day,

kiki

Kiki's Organic Crustless Quiche: Part of a Well-Balanced Wardrobe

I haven't done a food post for awhile, but I had a bunch of people email me about Kiki's Crustless Quiche that I mentioned in my January post titled Simple Sally in 2015 . This recipe is super super simple and quite tasty, minus the fattening and unnecessary crust! I will make one on a Sunday (like I did today) and then have it to nibble on throughout the week for breakfast, lunch, or dinner! Quiches are so easy to make and this one is no different. You honestly can't mess it up! I do use one secret ingredient that I think adds dimension to the overall flavor, but we will get to that later!

IMG_0102.JPG

First - ingredients! I typically do a Broc/Cheddar version, but always mix it up - sometimes it's spinach and feta - sometimes it's mexican w/ beans, tomatoes, and cheese blend...... I am a "kitchen sink" cook and it comes through in these moments when I try to give people recipe specifics! Oops. :o) Just use whatever you have in your house, but keep the base the same and it will always come out wonderful! Also, with all of the controversy and uncertainty around GMO's I tend to stick to organic ingredients, but you do whatever feels right! This is your journey... haha!

Kiki's Organic Crustless Quiche: Broc and Cheddar Version

  • 6-7 Large or Extra Large Eggs
  • 3/4 cup of Milk (this is approx, in all honestly I give it three healthy pours out of carton. I use whole, but you can use any kind)
  • 5-8 oz sharp (or extra sharp) cheddar cheese (I like the raw kind from Organic Valley)
  • 1 larger shallot (or you can use a small onion, whatever you have in the house - I prefer shallots)
  • 2 large cloves of garlic
  • 1 heaping cup of cooked broccoli (I use Organic frozen and either run it under hot water until it thaws or throw it in the microwave; if you go with fresh then give it a quick steam before using )
  • Salt/pepper to taste
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil for sauteing the veggies
  • Cooking spray for your quiche dish
  • And... the Secret Ingredient - I will reveal now because you might be making your grocery list off this - it's SOUR CREAM - just a dollop, no more and no less.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees

2. Spray your quiche dish with a cooking spray of your choice and set aside.

3. Use a small frying pan to heat about 1 tbsp of olive oil over medium.

4. Dice your shallot and garlic and throw into to the olive oil.

5. In the meantime, chop your broccoli (after it's been cooked) into tiny pieces (this allows for even distribution throughout your quiche). Once chopped, throw on the stove top with your shallot/garlic mixture. Add a little more olive oil. Remember - this is your chance to add "weight" to your quiche. You don't have a crust, so unless you want your quiche to fly away in lightness, you will heed my advice! :o)

6. Once nice and cooked, take off heat and set aside to cool.

7. Crack your 6-7 eggs into a mixing bowl.

8. Add your milk, cheese, dollop of sour cream, and salt/pepper to taste. Mix with a fork until completely combined.

9. Add in your broccoli/shallots/garlic mixture and stir until combined.

10. Pour into your prepared quiche [pie] dish and bake for approximately 15 minutes (depends on the heat of your oven). I usually rotate about halfway through. The quiche is done when you can slide a toothpick (or in my case a fondue stick - I highly recommend) in and it comes out clean!

11. Serve hot or cold w/ a nice mixed green salad and simple dressing. Sometimes I put a couple slices of avocado on top (with a squeeze of lime) and maybe some siracha for an added kick!

And that's it. It took me longer to put this post together then it did to make this delicious quiche!!

ENJOY and of course let me know if you have any questions!

Have a well-balanced and fashionable week,

kiki

Paying Homage: One Stitch at a Time

I think the best way to pay homage to those that came before us is to enjoy everything they worked to create so we could have a better life...

Years ago, before my grandmother died, she and my mother bequeathed to me several ponchos, shawls, and sweaters hand knit or crocheted by my great-grandmother. Some of which were made for my mother and some for my grandmother... but all passed through the hands of the women in my family and are still in perfect condition. To be able to wear a piece of my personal history is beyond words...

There is so much love and attention that went into the two ponchos featured in this post. The different stitches, the multitude of patterns, the angle of the neckline, the cut of the hemline- all of these things are what make the term "homemade" like nothing else in the world.  Timeless and relevant these items will get passed down to the next generation! :o)

This look is so relaxed and bohemian that I like to add a little pop of sparkle to dress it up. The double cuff is a simple option to accessorize without overdoing it.

My Milly Girl wanted to play a part! :o)

This poncho is my other favorite! I like the contrast of the brown leather bag and boots with a dark washed denim. If you love the look of hand-knit pieces, but don't have the ability to do it yourself then check these out:

1. Free People - here for $99, originally $400

2. Etsy - here w/ a hood, same neutral color as the first one I am wearing! $125 and completely handmade by a gal in Argentina!

3. Poncho Villa - here for authentic ponchos!

This Isabella Fiore handbag (more here) is probably 10 years old, but I still adore the grommets and the shape. Miraculously I have also kept it in good shape! The boots are from Ruche a couple winters ago. Ruche is a cool boutique-y version of Anthropologie that I first mentioned HERE. The curated selection is also ridiculously affordable.

Whatever it is that your family passed down to you - jewelry, clothing, fine china, furniture - just remember that these pieces have a unique story and once in your possession you can create your own! Those that came before you will be overjoyed!

Have a fun, fashionable week,

kiki

Sunshine in February: Fake it 'Til We Make it!

I don't know guys - as much as I love the winter and how pretty the snow is, I think I am ready for some consistent sunshine on my cheeks! Let's put it this way, in Boston, snow has been falling out of the sky more often then droplets of warm sun!

This may sound silly, but I bought a pair of yellow shoes last week. Shoes that I can't wear until spring. I placed them front and center in my closet to give me cheer each morning. I officially feel like I can get through the next month (even if I am faking it! :o)

Repeat this mantra in between shoveling: : 25 days until spring! 25 days until spring!

These are the shoes I bought from ZARA (here) to "cheer" me up! The perfect shade of yellow and just the right amount of color to make any outfit pop! Stay tuned - I am shooting these with Will today!

Stolen Look (From the Boys): New-Cycled Denim

This was a cold day in November. A sunrise shoot. Third outfit of the morning and it wasn't getting warmer. The seaport/city looked so beautiful in the early morning light and Will captured it perfectly (per usual, would you expect anything less? #magicianmann)...

So here is the scoop on the outfit - it's all about the jeans. They are recycled or as I like to say, new-cycled. I made something old, new again. The denim was part of Bryce's wardrobe for years - they are worn, soft, and super slouchy in a boyfriend (err husband) kinda way....

Women pay upward of $200 for a pair that will fit just like this, but in reality all you need to do is scour your male counterpart's closet. These are Citizen's Of Humanity and can either be purchased here or stolen from your local closet. :o)

Tricks about stealing from the boys...

- The Old Wash & Dry: boys are rough on their clothes, so wash before you wear! Also, dry them on the highest temp to make sure they are as small as they can get...

- Length: you can bet that they will be long on you. So roll 'em! I like the "french roll" - it gives a tapered look!

- Waist: they will be large through the waist. So... grab a funky belt and cinch it up or roll the waist down so they sit low on your hips like I did!

Full outfit details -

1. Sweater - UNIQLO (c/o) - similar here for $39.90! This sweater is slouchy, comfy,  and menswear inspired. They are such an amazing company! If you live in the Boston area you can hit up the following locations - Legacy Place, Natick, Chestnut Hill, or Faneuil Hall!

2. Jacket - ZARA (here) - of course you know my obsession. This is a core item in their assortment every winter, so it's available in different colors depending on the trends.

3. Shoes - Sam Edelman (here) - good, classic black pump w/ a twist. Add a feminine touch to the ruggedness of the men's look.

4. Bag -  ANOTHER SECRET STYLING TRICK... KEEP READING TO FIND OUT MORE!

We made our way from the Seaport to Castle Island. All places we love to see from our boat. Here I am watching the sunrise and wishing it was an 80 degree day ripping through the harbor on our boat....

Here's another fun trick.... the leopard Marc by Marc Jacobs bag in this shot is actually a laptop bag that I swap out for a clutch all the time. Especially when I travel for work - that way I don't have to carry multiple bags on my trip and it's cross-functional. Additionally, they are SUPER affordable! Check these cute ones out - here, here, and here! All around $100!

Being cold and goofy while capturing the sunrise with my phone...

The winter can only last so long..... Lift up your eyes and see.... the sun is rising!

Have a fashionably snowy day,

January represents a month of cleansing and simplifying. A clean start, a chance to purge unnecessary "things" from our daily lives and streamline our approach.  Below, I share my favorite ways to strip down the overwhelming noise that pollutes our existence.

KISS: Keep It Simple Sally.

Some key words to repeat in 2015:

Pure.  Simple.  Very few ingredients.  Less is More.   Organic when you can.  Holistic.   Wholesome.   Breathe.   Relax.  Drink good wine.

Little, tiny, itsy bitsy changes to simplify your routine can not only shave time off your morning schedule, but it's also an opportunity to detoxify out all of the unnecessary "stuff".

1. Organic Deodorant. I converted to Primal Pit Paste (here) over a year ago and it was the best decision I ever made (thanks Denise!). I had tried every "natural" deodorant you can think of. None of it worked. THIS does. I promise and trust someone who has tried it all. 6 ingredients - 95% organic - and smells wonderful (oh and did I mention this actually works?). Have you ever read the label on any commercial deodorant?

2. Pure Aragan Oil. My brand of choice is Josie Maran (here). I also made this change a little over a year ago and although it took some time for my skin to adjust, I have pretty much eradicated my sun spots! It makes me feel good to know that I am only putting one ingredient on my face.

3. L'Occitane Almond Body Oil (here). This cold weather can really leave the skin feeling dry and the oil hygrates, smells yummy, and transports me to another place (a warmer one!).

4. Dr.Brommers All-One Hemp Tea Tree Organic Soap (here). I was always a DOVE fan, but once I introduced this fabulous soap into my daily routine I won't be going back! Smells great and is all organic!

5. Tom's Toothpaste (here). Nothing much to say about this one - it's just a good change to make!

6. EOS Lavender Hand Sanitizer (here). I believe in hand washing over hand sanitizer, but I also travel a lot and know that the reality is a sink/soap is not always accessible on a plane, train, or car. This sanitizer is like a mini spa in a bottle - the smell of lavender calms and cleans.  I like the spray function too.

Simplify your daily pleasures, but definitely still indulge! I love snuggling up on the couch with my puppies and a good glass of wine just as much as a hot tea. Just depends on the night.

1. Lake Champlain Peruvian Dark Chocolate (here). Good for you and tasty! I have a piece after my lunch or dinner every day!

2. Decoy Wine (here). It's a weekly splurge for me. It's my fave! Try it - I know you will agree!

3. Tazo Organic Spicy Ginger Tea (here). I drink a cup (in my fabulous mug) every night  before bed.

4. Hydrangeas. A little bit of sunshine inside! It just makes me happy to have fresh flowers.

5. Illume Woodfire Candle (here). This is my go-to candle. I discovered it two falls ago on a trip to TERRAIN (Anthropologie's home/garden store). If you don't have a fireplace then this is the next best thing!

6. A really fabulous mug from a really fabulous place that transports you back to a moment. A special moment. Mine is from Glacier National Park in Montana.

January makes me want to feel cozy and warm on the inside, but also healthy after a long holiday season of eating heavy.

1. Shirazi Salad (Israeli): So easy - diced tomatoes, cucumber, pepper, and onion (optional). Add some olive oil, parsley, lots of fresh lemon, a dash of mint, sea salt, and pepper. Mix together!

2. Chia Pudding: Chia seeds mixed with Almond Milk and top w/ fruit, cacao nibs, or nuts! Shake in a mason jar and once it thickens it is ready to eat!

3. BluePrint Kale Green Drink: these are expensive, but make you feel like super woman when you drink them! I often trade out lunch with one of these and it's energizing and so healthy!

4. Crustless Quiche: I try to make one a week so I can bring for lunch or have a quick, healthy dinner on hand. I usually do a broc and cheddar combo. If you want my recipe - email me and I will send it! Promise you won't miss the crust!

5. Organic Ramen: Ramen is making a comeback. Bryce and I tried about 3 different kinds and this particular Organic version is YUMMY.

6. Mexican Chicken Tortilla Soup: Such a nice change up from the usual chili I make all winter. The Pioneer Woman makes a delish version (I modified, but you will get the gist) - HERE

Music makes the soul feel good! In our house, if we are cooking and there is no music pumping through the speakers then there is something wrong. We love music! Here are some of the things that are on my playlist right now...

1. Asgeir - this is an Icelandic 20-something-year-old genius. His lyrics are haunting and the vibes are so chill. Both albums are good. Some of my top songs: Head in the Snow, Torrent, Summer Guest, and Kings and Crosses.

2. Crozet - new discovery. Technically dance, but way more "atmospheric" then anything. A little 80's meets chill... songs to look for: Closed Shades, We'll be Gone by Then.

3. Broods - Ahhhh check out Bridges and Mother & Father!

4. Secret Life of Walter Mitty - great movie and great soundtrack!

5. Milky Chance - everyone is going crazy over their popular song, Stolen Dance, but Flashed Junk Mind is the real sleeper in my opinion.

6. Lindsey Stirling - this is an album that my dear friend Ilaria is obsessed with and I have to say it's good. Song of the Caged Bird and Transcendence are too of my personal faves.

Simple style lasts forever and after you purge 5 full garbage bags of clothes this month (remember this post here with Diana and Joanna?? GET TO IT LADIES), you are going to need to dial it back with these simple wardrobe building pieces.....

1. Madewell Pajamas - (here) - I am so into long johns right now and Madewell offers the most comfortable version. I also like a simple cami to match! On sale...so check it and get ready to snuggle with a warm cup of ginger tea in your fabulous mug! :o)

2. J.Crew White Buttondown w/ a twist (here) -  I love a classic with a twist. It's unexpected and fun! Super on sale right now!

3. H&M grey denim - soft and subtle and AFFORDABLE! (here). A different take on the regular old blue jeans...

4. Jennifer Zeuner Wishbone Necklace (here) in rose gold. My go-to pendant. When in doubt....

5. Asos (here) Simple Grey Cape. Gotta stay warm somehow. This grey cape/scarf/blanket all-in-one is the perfect color and weight to keep you looking stylish and cool.

6. J.Crew Rose Gold Oxfords (here) I love my silver ones, but they are also starting to look worn because I wear them so frequently. I am ready for a new metal type, baby! They go with everything - from skirts to dresses to jeans!

SO REMEMBER.......

KISS: Keep It Simple Sally.

and repeat.....

Pure.  Simple.  Very few ingredients.  Less is More.   Organic when you can.  Holistic.   Wholesome.   Breathe.   Relax.  Drink good wine.

have a fun, fashionable day,

kiki

Challenge and Change in 2015

Isn't it crazy that before the needles are dry on your Christmas tree there are already ads on TV screaming - Lose that holiday weight! Eat healthier! Cut this and cut that! And the pressure we put on ourselves to meet these goals is near impossible to live to.

It all feels ripe with negativity and a set up for failure. What happens on February 1st when we all break our new years resolutions? Guilt. Disappointment. Yuck.

Because of this, I don't believe in New Year's resolutions, but I do believe in challenging myself to change in small, attainable ways.

My idea is simple. Three Changes:

- Power of Positivity. Positive thinking produces positive results. No need to say more!

- Stepping out of the Comfort Zone. Don't let the naysayers in. Sometimes I hold back posting things on my blog out of fear of what people will say. Some think that the fashion world is full of empty-headed women and men, but the reality is that there is so much artistry in this industry - from the designers to the stylists. It's a creative outlet that energizes me and I need to feel good about sharing it! Remember to embrace what you are passionate about and eventually living outside of your comfort zone will become "in the zone". :o)

- Rephrase Intentions. I gave myself this challenge last year and for the most part I kept to it, but can still do better. Instead of saying, "I don't have time to do that" say, "I need to make time for that". It's such a subtle language change, but I promise it makes a difference. It shows hope opposed to hopelessness.

And one bonus challenge.... to enjoy living in this beautiful (albeit cold) city during the winter! We maximize the summer months, but have such tunnel vision of getting through the frozen January, February and March.

The shots in this post are from one of the coldest nights in the city (of course Will and I decide to shoot outfits without tights). Clearly, the clothes played second fiddle to the sights of the city! She was all dressed up for the holidays and looking gorgeous!

Happy New Year my readers! Thank you for following me on this journey and I hope I help to inspire your wardrobe every now and then in 2015!!!

Have a fun. fashionable year,

Holiday Dreamin': Week 3

Here it is, the week before Christmas and all through the city everything is stirring, even the mouse!!

With all of the craziness of the holidays it's hard to believe that we ever have the time to pause and really breath it in. The parties, the baking, the shopping! Oh My!

This week's Holiday Dreamin' is all about taking time. Breathing it all in. Doing something good for the soul.

I chose to highlight a brand that values being handcrafted, timeless, ethical, pure, and just plain good.  I first told you guys about Razimus Jewelry here and we did an amazing giveaway that one lucky reader won!

Using the beautifully decorated Boston Commons as a backdrop, Will and I set out to dazzle you with holiday cheer and in turn we ended up dazzling ourselves! It was uninterrupted time to breath the cool air, soak in the Christmas lights and see the city turn on its magic.

I am wearing a super comfy merlot colored dress from Anthropologie (here) paired with a fabulous Razimus Statement Necklace and a stack of Razimus bracelets

A couple ways to get your Razimus fix before Christmas is the following:

- Most importantly, place your order by 12/19 (tomorrow!!) at NOON EST to receive in time for Christmas!

- 10% off all orders over $100 on the Razimus website through the end of the year - see here

- For the next 2 Fridays Razimus will post a "What's in the Box" on Facebook and Instagram - they will select the winner after the final reveal on 12/26. The winner will be announced on 12/27. I know I am going to enter! Look for it this Friday, 12/19 and 12/26!!

- Follow Razimus on Facebook (here) and Instagram (here) for more ideas, information and to be part of a company that is truly the perfect holiday recipe - 4 heaping cups of homemade, a couple dashes of wholesome, and a lot of love! Let's get them to 500 LIKES!

I love the way the Razimus Statement Necklace and stacked single bracelets look with my Asos green swing dress (super on sale - um as in $24 - here - order by the 21st to wear it to your Xmas Eve party)!!

Repeat After Me:

I will.....

- Buy some ridiculously cool Razimus Jewelry for that special person in my life...

- Listen to Christmas music until my heart is overflowing.

- Drink lots of wine.

- Eat copious amounts of cookies.

- Lounge in my red and green pajamas all day!

- Giggle with my nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers...

- Capture every holiday moment, put it in my pocket, and don't let it go until December 25th, 2015. It will be here before I (we) know it!!

Have a Merry, Happy, Joyous. Fashionable Day,

Kiki

British Love On So Many Levels

I am not sure who copied who... but when I saw Kate Middleton in this long jacket earlier this week I couldn't believe it! I purchased an extremely similar one from Atterley Road in September (one of my favorite new British finds online) check it out here. And it's on sale right now!! Score. The real deal Tory Burch is sold out everywhere (the Kate effect), but I found it and it can be purchased at Lane Crawford on sale.

This never happens when I wear the jacket..... haha

Go check out Atterley Road! Maybe Kate Middleton will copy you one day too! :o)

Have a fun, fashionable day,

HOLIDAY DREAMIN' : WEEK 2

Forgive me in advance for the amount of photos in this post, but I just love everything about it. The location, the sunshine, the trees changing color, the warm cappuccino in my hands, and the outfit. It makes me happy. Will and I were in an excellent groove the day we did all of these shots and it really comes through in the images. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Thanks Will - just lovely! What a year of shooting - so many favorites to choose from and so many more in the queue.

For Holiday Dreamin' : Week 2 I am taking a simple approach. It's all about streamlining. The four things I will highlight this week are items that you will have in your closet forever. As we shop for gifts for everyone on our list, think about simplifying your own life and being happy with pieces that will last you a decade, not a season!

Item #1: A soft, basic, plaid, oversized scarf. The one I have on is from Zara two years ago, but plaid is having a moment, so there are plenty available. The one most similar to mine is here at Asos for $34.00. You will have it forever.

Item #2 and #3: A fabulous, versatile handbag and a kick ass pair of kicks that you can dress up/down everyday for pure comfort.

#2: This See By Chloe bag will last me forever. Navy goes with everything! Including BLACK! Here are some bags that will be your favorite, but won't break the bank: here from Topshop (kind of love this) for $125.00 or here from Foley and Corinna available at NM Last Call for $145.00.

#3: Remember these? Crisp, Cool, Edgy but Old School - Adidas Gazelles: here at Zappos for $60.00.

Oh this shot... the colors! The lighting! The moment Will captured! Might be one of my favorites of the year.

I love this blazer from Zara, but the real star of the show is Item #4: The Perfect White Tee from Everlane. If you keep up with my blog then you know I am obsessed with Everlane and always talk about how fab the company is - here - here -  here - here - here - GET IT? :o) Haha. Anyway - put one of these tees on your holiday list for $15.00 HERE .

Holidays are about celebrating the present, but also about reflecting/looking back on the year! When you look over your shoulder, what makes you happy? What makes you smile? Capture those glimpses and hope that you will recreate, relive, and double them in 2015!

For the next three weeks here is my advice:

practice deep breaths and patience.

Eat lots of cookies and drink lots of spiked eggnog.

Laugh and be MERRY.

Smile and reflect. And love every second.

Have a fun, fashionable, and holiday-rific day,

kiki

HOLIDAY DREAMIN' : WEEK 1

Travel has been my middle name since October. With two trips to Asia in under two months, I am craving comfortable and cozy. I guess pure exhaustion and cold airplanes will bring that on! So, it's been over a month since I last blogged and it's not because I don't have content - I DO! Will Mann and I have been working hard on the back end and I hope it's not too late to deliver all of the goodies we have in store! This will be a first in a series of Holiday Dreamin'... items I will feature that you will definitely put on your wishlist!!

ITEM #1: WIDE LEG, HIGH WAIST JEANS: Kinda digging them. ANTHROPOLOGIE: similar here for $128

ITEM #2: THE CAPE/ PONCHO/ BLANKET - a total 3 in 1. I got mine at a fab British online store called Atterley Road, but I found the exact one at another British site called Bank Fashion - here - super affordable at $35! Will keep you warm all winter.

ITEM #3: The Savannah Chic Carnivale Bracelet - seen above as the blue/gold spikey bracelet. This is the bracelet with a heart. They are handmade by Kenyan women using local and recycled materials. The owners are really sweet and ship via London (quickly). Comes in a cute pouch perfect for gift giving! Get it here and you will be helping a good cause and making someone's wrist happy! Approx $70 (prices are in British pound).

Hope this helps get your gift giving ideas flowing! I know it's getting mine moving and shaking! Who else has watched Love Actually 4x's already? Wink Wink...

Happy Beginning of the Holiday Season!!!

Have a fun, fashionable day,

kiki

Maggie and Milly and Molly and May

maggie and milly and molly and may

Went down to the beach (to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang

so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star

whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing

which raced sideways while blowing bubbles and

may came home with a smooth round stone

as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)

it's always ourselves we find in the sea

E.E. Cummings

4.jpg

A Confession:

This post reads like a diary entry through images. I have never used Lillian and Alice as a platform to discuss intimate thoughts and maybe I can blame this sudden urge on the nostalgia of seasons changing or simply, over-thinking. Either way, something is missing and even though I can't put my finger on it, I am on a mission to find out.

I have been feeling unclear about life and what it has in store for me. Do you ever wish that you had four more hours in a day or that you didn't need sleep in order to function? That you weren't racing against the clock? That if money weren't such an important part of existence that you would quit your day job and enjoy every moment of daylight and moonlight? Or work as a philanthropist? That there was more time with family? Friends? It's good to examine our lives, right?

Now, as we welcome in November, with leaves drifting to the ground and rain sliding down the window, I turn to months past for guidance....

"it's always ourselves we find in the sea"

Thank you, E.E. Cummings, for reminding me of just that.

Have a thoughtful, soul searching weekend,

Kiki

The UNIQLO Glow: Legacy Place Grand Opening!

UNIQLO is just plain cool. Cool in that "Fancy" LA to TOKYO way that only Iggy Azaelea can sing best. Japanese born, Tokyo happens to be home of the very first urban UNIQLO store. If this is the first you are hearing of the brand, that's OK, it certainly won't be the last! WHY you ask? The name says it all - UNIQLO is a masterful hybrid of two key words: Unique Clothing. If you love Helmut Lang, J Brand, or Theory then you will definitely enjoy their affordable and on-trend Japanese sister brand.

My first  exposure to the UNIQLO brand was at the NYC 5th Ave store several years back. It was an eye-opening, multi-level, colorful, innovative experience like I had never had before. Super sleek and a new type of shopping environment that will certainly drive consumers back into brick and mortar stores!

I am excited to announce that UNIQLO is opening TODAY at Legacy Place in Dedham, MA!

For my fellow Bostonians this is amazing news! Even though it is the third store to open in the area, it will be the ONLY store to carry the very popular +J Collection (here)! German fashion designer, Jil Sander launched the +J label in 2009 and it fits her exact aesthetic - contemporary, minimalist, and streamlined. It started such a cult following that the curated collection is now being relaunched at extremely select locations. Legacy Place is lucky enough to be one of them!

Here are a few of the pieces from the +J Collection that I have my eye on!

The clothing is affordable, well constructed, and fun! In addition to the women's line, UNIQLO also offers a large assortment for the man or child in your life!

"I like the concept of basic clothes in a democratic world,' Jil Sander (of +J Collection) said, 'UNIQLO reminds me of Apple; fantastic design for everyone."

Doors open at 10AM this morning and will be rocking all weekend long!! Swing by for your chance to get 1 of the 200 HEATTECH items they are giving away with a $50 purchase!! I know I will be there!

Have a fun, FANCY, UNIQLO weekend at Legacy Place,

Kiki

"Fall" Into this Color Palette

After being in hot and humid Asia for the last 10 days, I was pleasantly welcomed home by Fall. She greeted me with vivid colors and cool, crisp air. I couldn't be happier to be back in time to experience my second favorite season of the year. What better way than to honor it by wearing warm colors and fabrics??

                                                                                                                                                                                      Photography by Will Mann

The idea is to wear complimentary colors so you don't blend into the foliage like you are wearing camo! Be subtle and choose soft fabrics. As I often say, keep it simple Sally.

A Month of Transition: Carrying Your Summer Dress Into Fall

                                                                      &nbs…

                                                                                                                                                                                       William Mann Photography

You know that moment when you can feel the summer sun on your cheeks and the sand between your toes, but the smell of fall is lingering in the air? That was the above moment for me. We can only resist fall for so long, so find a way to include summer in those first weeks of the new season....

                                                                      &nbs…

                                                                                                                                                                                        William Mann Photography

French Connection Bike Dress / Zara Leather Jacket / Zara  Shoes                                           &nbs…

French Connection Bike Dress / Zara Leather Jacket / Zara  Shoes                                                          William Mann Photography

A couple things to think about as you integrate summer/fall pieces is texture....

- Tweeds and wools don't really jive with a summery, cotton dress. Way too much contrast and not enough flow.

- Leather always works! It somehow can match back to most materials. Super versatile. This Zara leather biker I am wearing gets so much wear! It works with everything.

- Whatever jacket  you choose should hit somewhere in the natural waist area or a little above!

- Throw on a scarf!

- Zip up some cute flat boots that hit mid-calf! Or a pair of shoes that are just enough summer and just enough fall.

What a gorgeous day this was off the inner harbor of Boston! Heading out on the boat for one last 80 degree day before the weather truly turns over to fall. Wherever you are and whatever you do, enjoy every moment!

Have a fun fashionable day,
